Tugboat insurance offers a way to keep the protection of your vessel at the forefront when the weather is working against your crew on the job, as both the ship being towed and the tug need to be protected.

The need for comprehensive coverage can be seen in a story recently reported by CBS New York, in which a tug and the barge it was pulling behind it were forced apart, with the former sinking and the latter being discovered on Atlantic Beach.

The source describes how the lone crewman of the tug seems to have been rescued, though the boat itself is gone to the waves. The barge, which is more than 125 feet long, was returning after performing some revitalization work on the Robert Moses Causeway Bridge.

After the ship ended up on land, though, the situation appears like it will get even more complicated, as another tugboat is required to bring this ship back out to its destination.

A release from the United States Coast Guard quoted local Lieutenant Chris Barger, who claims that the overall damage caused by this situation has been minimized.

"After ensuring mariner safety and neutralizing any threats to the waterways, we analyze these mishaps to prevent similar events from occurring in the future," Barger said, adding that the accident is still under investigation.

The source of the problem was listed as a "large swell," but the location is a commonly traversed one where vessels could find themselves contending with similar conditions unexpectedly. With boat towing insurance, companies can gain a little more control over the equipment they transport and the ships they use.
